Non-Traditional Music Selections for Wedding Processionals and
Recessionals
Using non-traditional music for wedding processionals and
recessionals is becoming more popular and is a great way to make
your wedding unique. The whole idea is to pick music you enjoy or
that has a particular link to your relationship with your soon to be
spouse.
Nearly any song can be used just keep in mind that for
processionals and recessionals you don't want something that moves
too quickly because it will be hard for everyone to keep a good pace
when going down the aisle. It is a good idea to make a list of songs
you like then you can more easily make a decision.
Processional Ideas
Classic with a Twist
If you still want a traditional song, but want to make is stand
out you may want to consider looking for a version that is more
contemporary or uses instruments that aren't traditionally used in
the song. There are hundreds of different arrangements for the
Wedding March and Pachelbel's "Canon In D" that can be used.
Non-Traditional Instrumental
There are hundreds of incredible symphonies that would make great
processional songs. Some great options are: Variations on an
Original Theme (Enigma Variations) Op. 36, Variations and Fugue on a
Theme by Mozart, Op. 132, Nessun Dorma instrumental version by
Puccini, Aranjuen Concerto Adagio by Rodrigo, Clair de Lune by
Debussy, Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini Var. 18 by Rachmaninov,
Largo (winter Opus 8 No. 4 from the Four Seasons) by Vivaldi, Largo
from the Opera Xerxes by G.F. Handel, Prince of Denmark's March by
Jeremiah Clark, and Wedding Contata by J.S. Bach. Be sure to listen
to may variations of these songs to find the perfect fit.
Completely Non-Traditional
Depending on the type of wedding you may choose a song that is
very much non-traditional, anything from swing music to a movie
soundtrack can be used. Just be sure that it reflects the style of
the wedding as well as you and your future spouse. Need some ideas
on where to look? Try radio stations, favorite artists, a song from
the year you first met, or a special song in your family.
Recessional Ideas
Where the processional is usually a slower piece, the recessional
is supposed to be a song of celebration as you walk together for the
first time as a married couple. Try to choose something for the
recessional that is upbeat and energetic. If you are looking for
something instrumental some good suggestions are Jesu, Joy of Man's
Desiring by J.S. Bach, Ode to Joy by Beethoven, and Alegretto
(Spring, Opus 8, No. 1 from the Four Seasons) by Vivaldi.
