1940's New York Glamour Theme Wedding
New York is the perfect backdrop to a glamorous 1940's Hollywood
inspired wedding. Need some ideas to get your theme going here are a
few:
Music and Food
Popular music of the era included big band music, jazz and swing
music. You can of course throw in some more modern music too, but
keeping with these main styles will really add to the ambiance. Some
of the popular musicians of the 1940's were: Louis Armstrong, Fred
Astaire, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Ella
Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Nat Kind Cole, the Andrews Sisters and Bing
Cosby. Luckily these artists created some of the most romantic songs
out there, so you should have plenty of options.
Attire
Look at celebrity dresses from the 1940's to inspire your
bridesmaids gowns and your own wedding dress. Some of the actresses
from the era include: Ginger Rogers, Ava Gardner, Katherine Hepburn,
Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, and Vivien Leigh. Do you hair in the
rolled 1940's style or model it after one of the actresses listed
above. Full length gloves and netted veils were in style as well.
Men of the 1940's usually wore pin striped suits or army uniforms.
Decorations and Favors
If you are able to hold the reception in an old theatre, large
ballroom or even a room that resembles a lounge you are already most
of the way there in creating a great 1940's feel. Calla Lilies were
the favorite flower for weddings during the era, so incorporating
them into some of the flower arrangements or even holding a single
calla lily as you walk down the aisle will lend a 1940's feel to
your wedding. Put swags of silk around the edges of the tables, put
a small square of a contrasting color in the center of the tables
and then add a single votive candle and a small single flower. This
was the popular look for swanky night clubs of the 1940's. Balloons
were also often used to decorate. You could get some in silver,
black and white, attach small glow in the dark stars to the strings
and float them over the party area. Some favor ideas are; a small
bottle of wine tied with ribbon, champagne glasses filled with
mints, anything with a little glitz and glamour will work.
If possible leave the reception in a 1940's vintage car!
