Sample Wedding Reception Timeline
Every couple is different and you can choose what and how you
would like to have your reception go, but if you are having some
trouble deciding what to do, this sample reception timeline is
perfect for giving you a general outline of events that are common
at a reception.
Guest and Wedding Party Arrivals: 15-40 minutes
Usually guests will begin to arrive at the reception before the
wedding party because the wedding party will be involved with
pictures after the ceremony. Make sure you speak to your DJ and have
him make necessary announcements and play soft music. Have light
refreshments available for guests as they wait for everyone to
arrive.
Introduce the Wedding Party to all the Guests: 15 minutes
Introduce the parents, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girl, ring
bearer, best man, maid of honor and the bride and groom.
First Dance: 5 minutes
Cake Cutting: 15 minutes
By doing this before dinner or the other festivities, it allows
staff to serve the cake throughout the rest of the reception.
Toast Blessing: 10 minutes
Ask everyone to be seated and allow the best man to offer his
toast, the maid of honor may also offer a toast if this is desired.
Dinner: 30 minutes-2 hours
The length of time allowed for dinner depends upon how many
guests you have invited. The more guests, the more amount of time
you should allow.
Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances: 10 minutes
After dinner these dance make for great photo opportunities and
will encourage guests to join in the fun.
Have fun and encourage guests to Dance: 30 minutes
Bouquet/Garter Toss: 15-20 minutes
Having this activity in the middle of the party will ensure that
single guests will be comfortable enough to participate.
